Motoly Privacy Policy

Last updated: 18 August 2026 · Applies to the Motoly iOS app (beta)

Motoly helps you track and reduce the cost of running your car. This policy explains what we collect, why, where it's stored, and your rights. We've tried to keep it in plain English.

What we collect

  • Account: your email address, used to sign you in and link your data to your account.
  • Vehicle details: your registration number and the public DVLA/DVSA data it returns (make, model, year, MOT history and advisories, tax status where available).
  • Expenses you log: amounts, categories, notes, dates, and photos of receipts or tyres you choose to scan.
  • Connected-car data (optional): if you connect your car via Smartcar, we receive the data you approve on the consent screen (such as odometer and fuel level). We never receive your car manufacturer login credentials.
  • Location (optional): used on-device to find fuel prices near you. Your location is sent to our server only to answer that search and is not stored.
  • Usage analytics: anonymous-by-default product events (which screens and features are used) so we can improve Motoly. No advertising trackers, no data sales, no session recording.

Where your data lives

  • Expenses, vehicle details and settings are stored on your device and backed up to our database (hosted in the EU) linked to your account.
  • Sign-in is handled by Clerk (our authentication provider). Analytics are processed by PostHog (EU region).
  • Receipt and tyre photos you scan are processed by Google's Gemini API to extract the details, then the extracted text is stored with your expense; we don't retain the images server-side.
  • Connected-car access tokens are held only on our servers, never on your phone.
  • Our backend runs on Vercel; fuel prices come from the UK government's Fuel Finder scheme; vehicle data comes from DVLA/DVSA services.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell your data, ever.
  • We don't show ads or share your data with advertisers.
  • We don't access your bank account (Motoly's expense tracking is manual and receipt-based).

Your rights and controls

  • Delete your account: Settings → Delete account in the app permanently erases your account and all backed-up data, and revokes any connected-car access. This is immediate and irreversible.
  • Disconnect your car: any time in Settings, or via your manufacturer's connected-services portal / mySmartcar.
  • UK GDPR: you can request a copy of your data, correction, or deletion by emailing us. You can complain to the ICO if you're unhappy with how we handle your data.

Retention

Your data is kept while your account exists. When you delete your account, backed-up data is removed immediately. Anonymous analytics events are retained by PostHog per our project settings.

Beta note

Motoly is currently in beta via TestFlight. Features and this policy may change as the product develops; material changes will be reflected on this page.
